Brian McKnight’s parents, Claude McKnight Jr. and Ruth Elaine Willis had him in Buffalo, New York, in 1969. As a child, he started singing in his church band and with his brothers in a cappella gospel quartet. McKnight went to Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, which is a Seventh-day Adventist university. He was kicked out of school during his junior year for breaking the rules about having guests in dorm rooms.
As a youngster, McKnight sent out demo tapes with the help of his older brother Claude and his band, Take 6. When he was 19, Wing Records, a branch of Mercury Records, gave him his first music contract. Then, in 1992, McKnight put out his first record, which was just called “McKnight.” The ballad “One Last Cry,” which was a top 20 hit, was on the album.
