Mark Simon Cavendish MBE (born May 21, 1985) is an Isle of Man native and professional road racer with the United Kingdom’s Astana Qazaqstan Team in the International Cycling Union (UCI).
The Madison, points race, and scratch race are his forte on the track, but he is a sprinter on the road. One of the greatest road sprinters of all time, he was termed “the greatest sprinter in the history of the Tour and of cycling” by Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme in 2021.

Cavendish was born in Douglas, Isle of Man on May 21, 1985, to Adele (originally from Yorkshire, England) and David. He began his BMX racing career at a young age, taking part in events at the National Sports Centre in Douglas.
When he was nine years old, he joined the local Douglas club and impressed everyone there with his determination. His old instructor, Dot Tilbury, remarked, “He started to win and often he would lap the other riders in the field.” He hated to come in second.

Personal Life
Cavendish wed London-based model Peta Todd, making him the stepfather to Todd’s son from a previous marriage. Cavendish and Todd are parents of four kids. He has a training center in Quarrata, Tuscany, Italy; a house in Ongar, Essex; and a house on the Isle of Man, which he considers to be his true home.
Two men were convicted in February 2023 at Chelmsford Crown Court for their roles in the November 2021 armed robbery of their Essex home.
Cavendish announced the construction of the Rise Above Sportive, a cyclosporine, in January 2015. The event is scheduled to take place in Chester and North Wales in August 2015. For his work in the cycling community, the University of Chester presented him with an honorary doctorate in science in November 2015.
He missed many months of racing after being diagnosed with Epstein-Barr virus in April 2017 but made it back for the Tour de France that year. He was re-diagnosed with the virus in August of 2018 and had to take time off from training and competition as he recovered.

Cavendish won the Madison gold in his rookie year as a top-tier track racer, in 2005. Three years later, in 2008, he rode for Great Britain at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships alongside Rob Hayles and Bradley Wiggins.
Cavendish has not raced on the track since the 2008 Summer Olympics when he failed to earn a medal. In 2016, he returned to competitive cycling after an extended absence and won his third consecutive UCI Track Cycling World Championship in Madison. Additionally, he competed as an individual and placed second in the omnium at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
