Taylor went to Hampton, Virginia’s Hampton High School. His job was to protect the team, receive kicks, and throw the ball. During his four years as a starter, the athlete helped the team go 34-4. He scored 100 scores and gained 7,690 yards. Besides running for 2,546 yards and 56 scores, he also threw for 5,144 yards and 44 more.
Taylor’s first game as a college football player was on September 8, 2007, against the LSU Tigers. The player ran for 44 yards on nine tries and made seven of eighteen throws for 62 yards.
It was planned for Tyrod to be a redshirt in 2008. But after Virginia Tech lost to East Carolina University, his redshirt was taken off because the Hokies needed more scoring. Like that, Taylor led the Hokies to a 9-3 record during the regular season and second place in the ACC’s Coastal Division as a junior. In the Chick-fil-A Bowl in 2009, the Virginia Tech Hokies beat the Tennessee Volunteers 37–14 to finish the season 10–3.
He was picked by the Baltimore Ravens 180th overall in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. That year, he was the 11th quarterback picked.
