Turning off all of your phone’s notifications doesn’t have to mean living in constant fear of missing a crucial text or call. Here’s how to get whatever you want.
On the iPhone
With so many settings for Do Not Disturb mode, iPhone users may make sure that only the most vital information gets through. To adjust it, go to Settings > Do Not Disturb. Specifically, you need probably to modify the following settings:
- Scheduled: Activate, then adjust the time to match your bedtime and wake-up times. The notifications won’t sound, but they will still show up on the lock screen. Turn on the Bedtime switch if you’d rather have them hidden from the lock screen as well. That way, they won’t beg you to check your emails at 10 p.m.; instead, they’ll only show up when you drag down the Notification Center.
- Allow Calls From: When Do Not Disturb is enabled, your iPhone will automatically mute all calls. However, you can accept calls from your Favorite contacts—such as your parents or spouse—if you enable this setting. Additionally, think about enabling Repeated Calls, which will let calls through in the event of an emergency and two calls from the same person in a three-minute period. (However, beware of spammers who attempt to circumvent it by making repeated calls.)
Though there are a few other useful settings in this menu, such as the ability to automatically respond to texts while driving, those are the most important ones. While you’re here, feel free to browse the other settings.
You will need to add contacts to your Favorites group if you turn on the Allow Calls From feature. Launch the Contacts app on your iPhone, tap the individual you want to add to your favorites, and then scroll down. They can call you even when Do Not Disturb is turned on if the appropriate individuals are added to your Favorites list and the aforementioned parameters are activated.
While most individuals will phone you in an emergency, iOS does allow you to accept text and iMessages from specific contacts. To activate this feature, go to the contact’s information, select Edit, then select Emergency Bypass from the Text Tone options.
Additionally, you may designate certain vibration patterns for your most critical contacts, eliminating the need for you to check your phone to see who is messaging. Simply press the Edit button, select Vibration under Text Tone, and then assign a recognizable sound.
Although it isn’t unique to Do Not Disturb, this useful function accomplishes a similar goal by alerting you when certain individuals are texting, allowing you to decide when an item is urgent and when it can wait.

Using Android Devices
Depending on the phone you use, the Do Not Disturb settings may be arranged slightly differently if it runs Google’s Android operating system. But this is a general overview of how they operate, which ought to help you.
- First, launch the Settings app, then select Sound > Turn off all noise. Here, you have the option to alter several elements of the feature, such as:
- Sound, vibration, and visuals: When using Do Not Disturb, you should generally turn off audio notifications. However, you can keep your phone from turning on when you receive notifications; however, I think most users would like to have this turned off.
- Exceptions: This is when it gets really helpful. Here, you have the option to accept calls, messages, or both from the contacts you have “starred,” even while Do Not Disturb is activated. You can do this to block most notifications, but not those from your mother, spouse, or other significant individuals. You can also enable “repeat callers,” which will prevent Do Not Disturb from being activated if someone calls you twice in a 15-minute period, as is frequently the case in emergency situations.
- Schedule: Lastly, you may use this to set Do Not Disturb to turn on and off automatically at particular times, such as before bed. It is imperative that you activate this.
I strongly advise enabling an exception for starred contacts and recurring calls. This will enable you to reject the majority of notifications in Do Not Disturb mode while keeping the ones you know won’t be received unless they’re critical or urgent. If you do that, be sure to start the appropriate people in the People app on your Android device. To do so, simply tap on a contact to display their information, then hit the star in the top-right corner to designate them as important.
