This post describes the issue and offers a solution for fixing your iPhone’s text notification issues.
What Causes Not Getting Text Notifications on iPhone?
Messages is the program that handles text notifications and is preinstalled on all iPhone models. There are several ways that SMS notifications on an iPhone can malfunction:
- You observe texts that did not have an alarm sound.
- There are no fresh SMS or iMessage notifications displayed on the lock screen.
- When messages arrive, there is no red dot on the Messages app.
There are several reasons why you could not be receiving SMS notifications on your iPhone. A connectivity issue is most likely to blame if you aren’t getting text messages even though you are aware that others have sent them to you. In that scenario, confirm that SMS and MMS are set up properly and that your phone is linked to both Wi-Fi and cellular data. The following are the most typical reasons why you might be receiving texts but not notifications:
- Incorrect notification configuration
- Inaccurate volume levels
- Program error
We won’t be discussing notifications from other apps, such as Facebook Messenger and other messaging apps; instead, we’ll address these in the sections below.
How to Fix iPhone Message Notification Not Working?
Something is stopping you from getting SMS alerts if you occasionally pick up your iPhone and notice texts that weren’t accompanied by a vibration, sound, or other type of alert. Try these changes to resolve the issue and resume receiving notifications.
1. Check Your Notification Settings
If you don’t have your notification settings set up correctly, you won’t get message notifications.
Make sure the Allow Notifications toggle is switched on by opening Settings > Notifications > Messages. Next, confirm that all of the boxes for Banners, Notification Center, and Lock Screen are checked.
2. Set or Change Your Notification Sound.
You could not hear your notification sound if it is turned off or set to a volume that is so low that you are unaware of it.
Choose a message tone that you believe you’ll notice by opening Settings > Sound & Haptics > Text Tone.
3. In Messages, Unmute the Contacts.
You can mute conversations using the Messages app. You won’t receive messages from that person when you expect to if you accidentally muted them or forgot to do so.
Locate any chat that has a crossed-out bell icon next to it by opening the Messages app. To unmute that individual, swipe left on the conversation and hit the bell icon that shows up.
4. Make Sure the Contact Isn’t Blocked.
iOS lets you block contacts in addition to muting talks. You won’t get any SMS or notifications from that contact if you unintentionally did it or forgot about it.
Check to see if someone is inadvertently included in the list by opening Settings > Messages > Blocked Contacts. If so, swipe left on the name of the contact and select Unblock.
5. Make Sure Your Phone Isn’t on Silent or Do Not Disturb Mode.
If you unintentionally switch on that option, you won’t get any text message alerts. Press the switch above the volume buttons to exit silent mode, and use this technique to exit do not disturb mode:
To change the setting from Do Not Disturb, open the Control Center, tap the focus icon, and choose any other setting.
6. Force Quit the Messages App
The Messages app may not notify users when text messages are received if it isn’t working properly. You can usually resolve this by forcing the program to close and then launching it again.
- For iPhone models other than the X, swipe halfway up to activate multitasking, then swipe up to dismiss Messages.
- Double-press the Home button on the iPhone 8, 7, and SE, then slide up to access Messages.
- To access Messages on an older iPhone, double-press the Home button, hold it down, and then tap the red badge.

7. Restart Your iPhone
Sometimes the problem can not be with the Messages app, but rather with iOS. Restarting the iPhone usually resolves the issue when that occurs.
Press and hold the volume down and side buttons at the same time if you have an iPhone X or later.
For iPhone models older than 5, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the power off slider shows up, then let go of it.
8. Disconnect Bluetooth Devices.
Text alerts may be sent to a device associated with your iPhone via Bluetooth rather than the phone’s speaker. To ensure it’s not linked, either unpair the device or open Control Center and select Bluetooth. Alternatively, switch off the Bluetooth device directly. Next, examine if your phone is receiving text alerts.
9. Check Your Custom Text Tones.
You may assign unique text and ring tones to every contact on your iPhone. You won’t hear from them when they text you if you unintentionally set it to none.
Select the name of the individual whose notifications you aren’t getting by opening Contacts. Choose any option other than None by tapping Text Tone. Tap Done once you’ve selected a tone.
10. Turn on Notify Me.
Have you stopped receiving essential notifications after you muted one or more chats in the Messages app because you were getting too many notifications? Even if your Messages chat is muted, you will receive an alert if you enable Notify Me whenever someone mentions you.
Make sure the Notify Me toggle is set on by opening Settings > Messages.
11. Turn off Message Forwarding
On your other Apple devices, do you get SMS notifications, but not on your phone? See whether your phone can display notifications once more by trying to disable Message Forwarding.
Go to Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding, then disable the toggles on all of the devices that are connected.

12. Check for Updates for Your iPhone.
Try installing any updates that are available for your iPhone.
If you own an Apple Watch, update it as well. If one is up to date and the other is not, alerts may show up on the Apple Watch but not on your iPhone.
