In Paris, her father was employed by United Press International. Her mother worked as a paper conservator for the Smithsonian Institution’s Freer and Sackler Galleries. Later, Smith’s parents separated.
Career of Yeardley Smith After graduating from high school, she moved to New York to launch her career. In Tom Stoppard’s “The Real Thing,” starring Jeremy Irons and Glenn Close, Smith understudied the character of Debbie before taking over for eight months.
