Beginnings in Early Life and in a Career
He was reared in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant area by his mother, Shamele Mackie, who is the real Papoose. He’s from Liberia. When he was a newborn, Mackie’s grandmother gave him the moniker Papoose because she thought he looked like a Native American infant. Mackie went to Oshawa, Quebec, Canada’s Immaculata High School as a teen.
In 1998, Mackie made his rap debut on the album “Roots of Evil” by Kool G Rap. For his debut song, “Thug Connection,” he included the B-side “Alphabetical Slaughter,” which he released in 2004. Mackie turned down Select Records’ offer of an eight-album contract.
Mixtapes Created by Individuals
After a stay on Rikers Island, Mackie began to record and sell his own mixtapes independently. DJ Kay Slay requested Mackie to appear on his program after he gave one of these mixtapes to him.
“Alphabetical Slaughter” intrigued Slay so much that he signed the artist to his Street sweepers imprint. Between 2004 and 2006, Mackie released more than a dozen mixtapes. A sampling of some of the titles was Street Knowledge, Beast from the East, The Underground King, and Unfinished Business.
As a result of his involvement with Busta Rhymes’ Flipmode Squad label, Mackie received the Justo Mixtape Award for Best Underground Artist during this time period.
Jive Records offered Mackie a $1.5 million contract as a result of his success. After multiple delays and the eventual shelving of his debut studio album, Mackie departed Jive to record additional independent mixtapes with DJ Kay Slay. “Internationally Known,” “Build or Destroy,” “Papoose Season,” “King of New York,” and “Most Hated Alive” are among the nine albums he released between 2007 and 2012.

Mackie’s second studio album, “You Can’t Stop Destiny,” was released in 2015, following the release of his mixtapes “Hoodie Season,” “Hoodie Season 2,” and “Cigar Society.” Troy Ave, Remy Ma, and Maino were among the performers on the album.
