Beginnings in Early Life and in a Career
He was reared in Brooklyn’s Bedford-Stuyvesant area by his mother, Shamele Mackie, who is the real Papoose. He’s from Liberia. When he was a newborn, Mackie’s grandmother gave him the moniker Papoose because she thought he looked like a Native American infant. Mackie went to Oshawa, Quebec, Canada’s Immaculata High School as a teen.
In 1998, Mackie made his rap debut on the album “Roots of Evil” by Kool G Rap. For his debut song, “Thug Connection,” he included the B-side “Alphabetical Slaughter,” which he released in 2004. Mackie turned down Select Records’ offer of an eight-album contract.
Mixtapes Created by Individuals
After a stay on Rikers Island, Mackie began to record and sell his own mixtapes independently. DJ Kay Slay requested Mackie to appear on his program after he gave one of these mixtapes to him.
“Alphabetical Slaughter” intrigued Slay so much that he signed the artist to his Street sweepers imprint. Between 2004 and 2006, Mackie released more than a dozen mixtapes. A sampling of some of the titles was Street Knowledge, Beast from the East, The Underground King, and Unfinished Business.

As a result of his involvement with Busta Rhymes’ Flipmode Squad label, Mackie received the Justo Mixtape Award for Best Underground Artist during this time period.
Jive Records offered Mackie a $1.5 million contract as a result of his success. After multiple delays and the eventual shelving of his debut studio album, Mackie departed Jive to record additional independent mixtapes with DJ Kay Slay. “Internationally Known,” “Build or Destroy,” “Papoose Season,” “King of New York,” and “Most Hated Alive” are among the nine albums he released between 2007 and 2012.

Mackie finally released his debut album, “The Nacirema Dream,” in 2013 after releasing 27 mixtapes Erykah Badu, Jadakiss, Mavado, and Mobb Deep all appeared on the album, which was released through Fontana Distribution and Honorable Records.
It featured the hits “On Top of My Game,” “What’s My Name,” and “Get At Me.” The album debuted at number 97 on the Billboard 200 and at number 13 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart, receiving generally positive reviews from critics.
Mackie’s second studio album, “You Can’t Stop Destiny,” was released in 2015, following the release of his mixtapes “Hoodie Season,” “Hoodie Season 2,” and “Cigar Society.” Troy Ave, Remy Ma, and Maino were among the performers on the album. In 2019, the album “Underrated” was released as the third studio album. In 2020, “Endangered Species” will be released.

Film and Television
Mackie also starred in the sixth season of the VH1 reality show “Love & Hip Hop: New York” alongside his wife Remy Ma. The show follows the lives of a number of people in New York City’s hip-hop community. As a result of their first appearance on the show, Mackie and Ma were promoted to main cast members for seasons nine and ten.
“Remy & Papoose: Meet the Mackies” was a three-week event spinoff series that documented the couple’s lives as they prepared to welcome their first child in 2018. Their very own Christmas special, “Remy & Papoose: A Merry Mackie Holiday,” also featured them.
“Righteous Kill,” a 2008 criminal thriller, featured Mackie in a minor role. In addition to Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, John Leguizamo, and Carla Gugino, it was directed by Jon Avnet and had a stellar cast. The film also featured a cameo appearance by 50 Cent, a hip-hop artist.

Remy Ma married Mackie while he was serving a sentence in a New York State jail in 2008. In connection with a shooting outside a Manhattan delicatessen, Ma had recently been convicted of assault, illegal firearm possession, and attempted coercion.
