Broderick was his birth name. Stephen Harvey Sr. was born in Welch, West Virginia, on January 17, 1957. He is the son of coal miner Jesse Harvey and Eloise Vera. His name, Broderick, comes from the TV show Highway Patrol actor Broderick Crawford. Harvey stuttered a lot as a child, but he was able to get over it in the end.
Harvey’s family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and lived on East 112th Street, which was renamed Steve Harvey Way in 2015. In 1974, he got out of Glenville High School.

Early Career Life and Comedy
Harvey has worked as a boxer, an autoworker, an insurance salesman, a carpet cleaner, and a mail carrier.
On October 8, 1985, he did his first stand-up comedy show at the Hilarities Comedy Club in Cleveland, Ohio. In the late 1980s, Harvey spent three years living on the streets.
When he wasn’t at gigs that gave him a hotel, he slept in his 1976 Ford and showered at gas stations or swimming pool showers.
Rich and Becky Liss helped Harvey with a contract for carpet cleaning and a travel agency credit during this time.
